What Age To Start Archery?
Many people are wondering what the right age is to start archery. From a physical point of view, generally, children can start building strength and coordination for shooting from around six years old. However, some children may not be mentally ready for the responsibility of handling a bow and arrow until they are much older. Here at Bowcraft Archery we would love to teach six year olds but most insurance carries set the age limit to 8 years old and older. Continue reading to learn why.
Why Do Parents Have To Wait?
It is important to bear in mind that Archery requires strong focus and determination, so it’s best to ensure that when starting out young, there is adequate adult supervision at all times. Kids lose attention fast due to being introduced to technology in the modern day. Switching up targets and adding fun activities in archery will keep them hooked. Starting with lighter bows and arrows made specifically for children can help them progress quickly while also maintaining safety during practice and competition. A good bow to start with is a bow that is 15 ibs for kids seven and under and 20 ibs for kids eight to ten years old. Having professional coaches or mentors who understand how to challenge children without making them feel overwhelmed will also help in creating an enjoyable, inspiring experience for any child looking to take up archery as a hobby or sport.
What About Leagues And Competitions?
Kids who are in grades 4-12 can join a special archery league we offer and compete in competitions. Our Cadet archery program is for people under 17 and senior is for over 18. It is important to note that even if one has reached this age requirement, one will still need a certain amount of maturity to participate.
